This picture perfect rural landscape is one of panoramic mountain views. Polk County is located in the central Blue Ridge Mountains. This area of North Carolina is known for its mild climate due to the "Thermal Belt." Warm air settles and moderates the temperatures making it cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
The area has earned a reputation of being a premier retirement community. Polk County was listed as one of the top ten retirement communities by Money Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal.
Polk County is made up of three historic small towns, Saluda, Tryon and the county seat of Columbus. You’ll find historic sites, arts and crafts, scenic vistas, and the down-home friendly people. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Lady Astor, Sidney Lanier, William Gillette, and David Niven were regular guests.
The downtown area of Historic Saluda has over 16 buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places. Saluda is known for its artists, craftsmen, shops, and wonderful food establishments.
Columbus is the county seat where the historic courthouse is located. The courthouse is one of the oldest in North Carolina. It has been fully restored and is still in use today.
Equestrian enthusiasts have more than a 50-year heritage in Tryon including steeplechase, dressage, hunter-jumper, and carriage-driving events. The Tryon Riding and Hunt Club, FENCE (Foothills Equestrian Nature Center), and other equestrian organizations host events from March through early December. The Block House Steeplechase Races, held in April, have been an annual event for 54 years.
Enjoy fishing, hiking, and canoeing in the ten thousand acres of the Green River Game Lands. Drive the Pacolet River Scenic Byway. Discover wildflowers at Pearsons Falls or enjoy antique and art shopping along the scenic country roads of Polk County.
Of course, the neighbors aren’t shabby either.
